I was chatting with Dx over at BzC, trying to squeeze, or rather beg the source code out of him. He wouldn't give it, not surprisingly, and I asked him if he would tell me how to write Bz with the Genesis 3d or Torque game engine, [he said no] and it hit me that, it would be much easier to just make another bz instead of trying to duplicate bz1, like Bz3! Would anyone seriously want to team up and make Bz3, or at least start the ball rolling? I have lots of time on hand, but I don't know any programming languages.

Just some thoughts I had; nothing smart as usual.

LOL. The day reaper would hand over the source code is the day we all started playing bze.

Duplicating Battlezone 1 or making a Battlezone game from scratch would be equally difficult. I know basic programming concepts and I'd love to help, but currently the only way for me to make games is to use Game Maker, which handles all the low level work for you, and is most suited to 2D games and has some limited 3D functionality. I can program, but as for building a GUI in C++, I don't even know where to start, and all the help I looked at online seems so cryptic, I don't understand it.

In terms of storyline If i'm honest I think we'd have to pick up on where the BZ2 guys have carried on with it. BZ2 does continue the story very well and it's where the creators took it. Also their fan made add-on packs are quite good as well, Forgotten enemies is well designed and really challenging to play, I've been stuck on it for ages.
Sadly BZ1 didn't follow BZ2 in having a largely outward thinking mod selection, there are a lot of BZ2 add ons and as such their community just seems a little bit freer, (I may be wrong and they may also have a number of different forums where some people seem to spend more time slagging off the other than actually playing or improving the game)

Spork, I don't think you would have to write everything from scratch, that would be total madness. Dx suggested using the Ogre 3d engine, so I don't think you would have to write that, although I'm not sure if it is a gaming engine, or just a graphics engine. I think it is a graphics engine. We might be able to use the Torque gaming engine, as I've heard it is a decent gaming platform, though, it costs 100$ a programmer, which even might be good, to sift out those who really and truly want to help, and those who just want to, well, not sure what. There are other game engines out there, by the way, if you don't want to pay >$50(can divide the cost for one programmer with those who want to help, and just copy the source code) .

Baldrick, we(those who want to develop Bz3) would have to first make our gaming platform, complete with graphics, ships, skins, landscape, and everything vital to the base platform, before we gave an effort to the storyline. Well, maybe some thinking, as we would need to know what kind of ships, etc to make, but I think it would be wise to come up with the platform first. Good suggestion though.

Oh, almost forgot, here are some links:
http://www.planettribes.com/torque/torque.shtml [think torque]
http://www.ogre3d.org/ [think ogre]

Have fun!

This is my 3rd post tonight on this subject, lol, just trying to be noticed.

I actually have been thinking of a way to do this in a open-source program with a built in game engine called blender3D (the game engine is called BGE). It's not as simple as people make it out to be and uses python, an easy as hell programming language to learn.

If you were to go this route I know EXACTLY how you would want to do it, and BGE even has a great physics engine built in (called Bullet).

It's funky to learn but (like the ever so popular Game Maker) has a logic system built in for non-programmer types to 'write' code (it's graphical and takes only minuets to learn)

Unfortunantely, It's not ment to take on massive projects to the scale of BZ3, but could still do it.

Another great (free) game engine I know of is Crystal Space.

Torque and Orge can do it too, but they might not be the best solutions for the kind of game that BZ3 would be... even more so when you realize that this is a small community project and wouldn't have a ton of momentum behind it.

Ether way, I would love to be a part of it, count me in if you would.

Question:

Why the hell are we taking suggestions from reaper?

Sorry, troll mode kicked in. I'll keep it to a bear minimum, I promise. D:
