Hello. Thank you for contacting Activision Technical Support.

Unfortunately, Activision will not be publishing any new Battlezone games.

Without 20 million and an expert team of salesmen no game publisher is going to be interested in making a third installment of Battlezone. It sucks too because that is my dream, to play a new version of it. I fell in love with the gameplay back in 1999 when it first came out. Hell I'd be satisfied with a new G66 mappack from Natty Bumppo, but sadly he doesn't seem to be doing much bz2 work nowadays. If I ever win the lottery I'd try to do something, short of that, someone is going to have to pitch a seriously cool idea to Atari, EA or Activision (whoever is the rightful owner) and probably have to do most of the initial work to get it started too. I know it won't be me because I'm just a Construction Superintendent and am not a modder, programmer or anything of the sort. I just know a good game when I see one.

Pandemic Studios I believe holds all the rights for the game. Activision did the publishing if I'm correct. If I'm wrong, do correct me.

Surely these "hackers" know how to code. Why not put that skill to more productive use? Was the source ever leaked? If not, could someone decompile the binaries? If sound or graphics upgrades are all that are desired, perhaps someone could "hack" the rear end of the game to facilitate the use of more current acoustical and graphical capabilities? Of course, this is dependent upon the level of modularity with which the game was coded. If all engine components were heavily integrated, this is not a viable option.

A determined bunch could re-develop the concept without the assistance of a major corporation. Perhaps the community could write an updated version of the game from scratch or re-develop it using a pre-existing gaming engine, all the while taking care not to infringe upon the rights of the lincense holder. After the coding is squared away, all that would be needed is a set of people to undertake the 3D models, mapping and sound work. The original plot could remain, a new storyline could be written or the current one could be continued.

It would certainly take time and it would prove quite an undertaking but this sort of thing has happened in the past with other gaming applications:

Falcon 4.0 (Before F4:AF, this sim underwent massive community updates.)

Star Fox: Shadows of Lylat (a rather impressive PC based freeware re-imagining of the console space shooter)

It is incredibly difficult, if not near impossible to de-compile .DLL binaries. Most compiling that is done is usually a one-way ticket, your not going back. So, unless someone was an excellent hacker to hack open the files to get the source code, I don't see it feasible that that will happen, at all.

The problem is, you would still need permission from either Pandemic Studios or Activision in order to do something anyway because your using the game's code to develop something with. Now, if it was all from scratch, that is a different story. Battlezone, and BZ2 are still copyright and is valid to Activision/Pandemic, so they still have all the rights for the games and do with it as they wish.

Okay. From scratch then...

Your statement is incorrect.

Bz 1.4 is the last OFFICIAL patch from Activision.

If made, 1.5 will be quite unofficial.

Activision ditched BZ long ago. :P

Don't you think that would be a tad, too complex?
